Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of this class, the students will be able to:    -   understand the cultural factors involved in the making of geographic atlases;  -   identify and analyze racial stereotypes and their illustration in the medias in a broad sense;  -   describe mechanisms of construction of a priori related to a minor social group;  -   explain scientific arguments in favor of cultural stereotypes in the history of thought;  -   identify cultural and social premises of Western world views at different historical time periods; - define basic concepts in anthropology of religions and illustrate them with case studies; - describe the consequences of intercultural encounter over world views ;  - understand the universality of religious behaviors and diversity of their expression;  - explain the social and cultural implications of rituals, rites of passage in particular.

Content of UE

Study of medias in a broad sense (travel literature, atlases, painting, photography, cinema, reality shows, advertising, novels, cartoons, written press, museums, exhibitions) in an anthropological perspective. With the help of case studies, holistic et historical analysis of the construction of stereotypes of scientific and pupular racism and their illustration in different contexts.

General introduction to religious anthropology. Through case studies, holistic analysis of rites, cultual movements and religious changes in different contexts. 
Etymology.
Missionnaries, Christianity and social transformations in the Pacific.
Humors and bodily substances.
Mana.
Ritual houses and male initiation in New-Guinea. 
Death, relics and funerals.
Cargo cults in Melanesia.
Therapeutic and witchcraft practices in our regions.
