      Objectives of general skills

      • Describe, organise, analyse and prioritise the phenomena observed in the medical field
        • Understand the expression of biological realities in absolute or relative terms, the orders of magnitude, proportions and probability
      • Control the molecular, morphological and functional approaches of normal and pathological conditions
        • Describe these states and technical examinations to quantify them in different approaches, as well as describe the operational characteristics of these examinations
        • Integrate concepts from these different approaches in a complex biomedical problem
        • Explain the relationships between molecular, morphological and functional changes and pathological conditions, their clinical signs and symptoms
      • Demonstrate interpersonal skills developed within a medical context
        • Summarise, explain, and argue
      • Develop reasoning skills
        • Understand and apply the basic principles of reasoning (obtaining data, analysis, synthesis, comparison, the rule of three, syllogism, analogy, Boolean logic, etc.)
        • Integrate reasoning in clinical approaches
      • Manage resources
        • Prioritise
        • Integrate an economic dimension in clinical reasoning
      • Promote health
        • Understand the fundamentals of health education
      • Manage their studies
        • Have developed an interest for medicine
        • Locate scientific information efficiently
        • Compare different sources of information
      • Be a responsible practitioner
        • Base reasoning on the data taken from scientific literature (evidence-based-medicine)
        • Integrate a human dimension in their approach to the patient
        • Respect the diversity of gender, culture and opinion

      UE's Learning outcomes

Rather than an indigestible catalog of molecules, medicines and activities, the UE aims to familiarize the future doctor with key drug targets for understanding the mode of action and side effects of drugs. Building on biochemical, physiological and pathological notions, the course explains the possibilities of pharmacological modulation, their advantages and disadvantages.

      UE Content

The chemical mediators and their modulation: transmitters of the autonomic nervous system, serotonin, purines, cytokines, bradykinin, kallidin, histamine, eicosanoids, cannabinoids, peptides and proteins, NO
      Drugs acting on renal function
      Control of blood pressure
      Control of angina
      Control of cardiac arrhythmias
      Treatment of heart failure
      Modulation of blood clotting
      Modulation of lipid profile
      Antibiotics
The chemical mediators of the central nervous system and their modulation: hypnotics, anxiolytics, antidepressants
      Drugs acting on pulmonary function
