Objectives of general skills

  • Understand language of instruction and foreign languages?? (language skills)
    • Communicate easily and adequately, in both selected foreign languages, at a minimum level of B2 in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)?
  • Understand and integrate cultural similarities and differences (cultural and intercultural skills)
    • Identify cultural differences and talk about them
  • Use lexicographical resources and reference materials to lead linguistic mediation activities individually or as part of a team (professional skills)
    • Use printed or electronic dictionaries and reference materials appropriately

UE's Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will have a good command of German at the A2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

More specifically, students will be able to :
- read and understand short and simple texts about common and concrete topics;
- identify standard letters on familiar topics  and understand short and simple personal letters ;
- find specific, predictable information in simple everyday material such as advertisements and prospectuses;
- identify relevant information in simple written samples (letters, short newspaper articles describing facts).

UE Content

Commented reading of factual texts.

Class activities centred on :
- understanding of general, particular and detailed information;
- developing efficient reading strategies ; 
- using lexical research methods and structural analysis.

Prior experience

Students enrolling in first-year English are expected to already have attained at least the A2 level as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for languages.
