Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Imagine, design, implement and operate compounds, products and materials to specific properties and physical, chemical and biochemical solutions/processes leading to obtaining these materials by integrating needs, contexts and issues (technical, economic, societal, ethical, safety and environmental).
    • Identify complex problems to be solved and formulate the specifications by integrating client needs, contexts and issues (technical, economic, societal, ethical and environmental).
    • Evaluate the approach and results for their adaptation (optimisation, quality, environment, safety/security).
  • Mobilise a structured set of scientific knowledge and skills and specialised techniques in order to carry out missions of chemical engineering and materials science, using their expertise and adaptability.
    • Master and appropriately apply knowledge, models, methods and techniques specific to the field of chemistry and materials science.
    • Analyse and model a problem/process/producing pathway by critically selecting theories and methodological approaches (modelling, calculations), and taking into account multidisciplinary aspects.

Learning Outcomes of UE

Cite and explain the conception and operating principles of some essential separation unit operations (absorption, liquid-liquid extraction, azeotropic distillation) ; Describe and apply the specific hydrodynamic behaviour of different separation devices ; Describe and apply adequately equilibrium laws, mass and energy balances (for continuous and batch operations), transfer kinetics with or without chemical reactions ; Design a contactor by applying theoretical stages concept (stage efficiency estimation) or kinetic concept (transfer coefficient estimation) ; Make a choice of a technology for a given separation according to a list of criteria.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Study of some essential separation unit operations (absorption, liquid-liquid extraction, azeotropic distillation) following a similar methodology : technology (batch and continuous operations) ; equilibrium laws ; hydrodynamics ; transfer kinetics ; links with chemical reaction and heat transfer ; representative equations; design/simulation ; effects of operating conditions.

Written exercise, 20 % of the mark, maximum duration : 180 min (resolution of an integrated numerical application, with class notes and exercises notes). Laboratory work : including reports on laboratory work and on industrial visits (15 % of the mark) and a laboratory exam (10 % of the mark, maximum duration : 120 min), including practical questions on the laboratory work.
