Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in science and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
    • Identify, describe and explain basic scientific and mathematical principles
    • Identify, describe and explain the basic principles of engineering particularly in their specialising field
    • Understand laboratory techniques: testing, measuring, monitoring protocol, and security
  • Communicate in a structured way - both orally and in writing, in French and English - giving clear, accurate, reasoned information
    • Present analysis or experiment results in laboratory reports

Learning Outcomes of UE

This UE is constituted of 2 AA :

- I-TELE-003 : Principes des télécommunications numériques
understand the nowadays world of telecommunications;
master the fundamentals and analyse baseband telecommunications systems and transmissions with modulation;
acquire long term 'telecommunication minded' skills to provide future engineers with a clear view of any telecommunication system (principles and parameters), mainly in the fields of target performance, metrology and orders of magnitude;
acquire the concepts related to random variables.

- I-TELE-004 : Télécommunications optiques
Understanding of the operation of a fiber optic communication chain implementing a direct detection receiver.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

This UE consists of 2 AA, I-TELE-003 which gives the theoretical bases of communications systems and I-TELE-004 which illustrates a communications system implementing the theory taught in I-TELE-003.

- I-TELE-003 : Principes des télécommunications numériques
panorama of telecommunication systems; signals and linear systems analysis; electromagnetic spectrum allocation;  ; random signals ; non linear effects ; fundamentals of noises and study of their impact on telecommunication links ; examples of channel coding; analysis and impact of intersymbol interference; modulations (amplitude, phase, frequency and in quadrature); evaluation of digital transmissions performance.

- I-TELE-004 : Télécommunications optiques
Principle of propagation in optical fibers; attenuation and dispersion phenomena, OTDR, introduction to lasers and optical detectors, optical modulation, optical receiver in direct detection, bit error rate calculation.

Note: I-TELE-003 and I-TELE-004 are part of the same UE and represent respectively 5/7 and 2/7 of the total score of the UE if the marks obtained in the two AAs are strictly greater than 7/ 20. Otherwise, the EU score will be equal to the lowest of the two scores. However, in this case, the marks for a successful AA will carry over to the next session.
