Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in science and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
    • Identify, describe and explain basic scientific and mathematical principles
    • Identify, describe and explain the basic principles of engineering particularly in their specialising field
    • Understand laboratory techniques: testing, measuring, monitoring protocol, and security
    • Select and rigorously apply knowledge, tools and methods in sciences and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines

Learning Outcomes of UE

To master the tools needed for understanding and studying the visocoelastic behaviour of liquid media ; to interpret the rheological behaviour of materials and to know the parameters allowing the link between their physical properties and their texture, structure and morphology.
To master the basic knowledge required to correlate the mechanical behaviour of solids with their crystal structures and microstructures.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

The two AAs of this UE are complementary in addressing the behavior of liquids and solids when subjected to mechanical stresses. Are respectively studied:
Dynamic and kinetic parameters ; rheological state equation ; viscosities and important parameters ; linear viscoelasticity (relaxation and creep) ; viscoelastic models (Kelvin Voigt, Maxwell, Burgers) ; linear viscoelasticity (oscillatory tests) ; different flow behaviours ; experimental devices ; stability of suspensions and colloïds ; study of several practical cases.
Description and analytical modelling of the mechanical behaviour of solids (elasticity/viscoelasticity; plasticity/viscoplasticity); Characterization of mechanical properties; Elasticity of crystalline solids, glasses, polymers and composites; Plasticity of metals and metal alloys; Influence of temperature on the mechanical behaviour of materials.
