Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in science and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
    • Identify, describe and explain basic scientific and mathematical principles
    • Identify, describe and explain the basic principles of engineering particularly in their specialising field
    • Understand laboratory techniques: testing, measuring, monitoring protocol, and security
    • Select and rigorously apply knowledge, tools and methods in sciences and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
  • Collaborate, work in a team
    • Interact effectively with other students to carry out collaborative projects.
  • Communicate in a structured way - both orally and in writing, in French and English - giving clear, accurate, reasoned information
    • Argue to and persuade customers, teachers and a board both orally and in writing
    • Give an effective oral presentation, using presentation materials appropriately
    • Present analysis or experiment results in laboratory reports
  • Demonstrate thoroughness and independence throughout their studies
    • Demonstrate self-awareness, asses themself, and develop appropriate learning strategies.
    • Develop their scientific curiosity and open-mindedness

Learning Outcomes of UE

Understand the notion of chemical equilibrium and be able to apply it to the four main types of chemical reactions in aqueous solution (acid-base ; oxido-reduction, precipitation-dissolution, complexation) ; Understand the elemental basis of chemical reactions, with an overall understanding, and be able to make the connection with some daily natural or industrial applications ; understand how molecular dynamics acts upon the chemical reactions kinetics so as to be able to control it.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Chemical equilibria ; acid-base reactions ; oxido-reduction reactions ; precipitation-dissolution reactions ; complexation reactions ; coupling reactions ; chemical kinetics.

Prior Experience

Understanding of the following concepts: chemical bonding ; electrostatic interactions; solute-solvent interactions ; ionic structure ; chemical affinity ; equilibrium constant ; entropy ; enthalpy ; kinetic theory of gases.

I-SDMA-010
  • Production (written work, report, essay, collection, product, etc.) - To be submitted in class
  • Oral examination - Face-to-face
  • Graded assignment(s) - Face-to-face

Term 2 Assessment - comments

AATerm 2 Assessment - comments
I-SDMA-010Graded exercise, 20 % of the mark, maximal duration : 2 h (only exercises). Laboratory (reports and laboratory work), 20 % of the mark. Oral examination, 60 % of the mark. After receiving the question, the student may read over his course notes for maximum 20 min and afterwards write his answer on transparent slides that he will present. The accent is put on the understanding of phenomena and concepts rather than on the memorization).

The overall mark of the course (i.e. "AA") will be calculated by a weighted GEOMETRIC mean of the different marks.

Term 3 Assessment - type

AAType(s) and mode(s) of Q3 assessment
I-SDMA-010
  • Written examination - Face-to-face
  • Production (written work, report, essay, collection, product, etc.) - To be submitted in class
  • Oral examination - Face-to-face

Term 3 Assessment - comments

AATerm 3 Assessment - comments
I-SDMA-010A written examination, based exclusively on exercises, is organised (weighting: 20%, duration: maximum 2 hours). Carry-over (automatic, but optional) of the 1st session mark if > 60 %.
Carry-over of the 1st session mark for practical work (20%), regardless of the mark. The oral exam tests theoretical knowledge. After receiving the question, the student can reread his notes for 20 minutes, then write his answer on transparent slides and present it. The emphasis is on understanding phenomena and concepts rather than memorization (weighting: 60%).

The overall "AA" mark will be calculated as a weighted GEOMETRIC average of the different marks.
