Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of this course, students will have developed an enhanced understanding of the functions of the public sector, the nature and evolution of expenditures and revenues, and the budget balance and debt. They will also be able to examine budgetary data for Belgium in a European perspective.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

The objective of this unit is to give students an historical overview of the evolution of national accounting, all in the context of Belgium's membership in the European System of Accounts (ESA). We will then continue with a description of the institutional units and sectors taken into account, the transactions considered (transactions in goods and services, distributive transactions, financial transactions), as well as the different accounts presented in national accounting (production accounts, distribution and use of income accounts, capital accounts, financial accounts). Finally, students will master the definition and construction of the main aggregates, measures and tables used in national accounting (GDP, GNI, Input-Output Table (IOT), measurement of inflation, capital stock, employment).
