Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand language of instruction and foreign languages (language skills)
    • Use French perfectly in a variety of non-technical situations, both orally and in writing
    • Understand, reformulate and summarise documents and presentations, in French, on various topics written by experts, including those related to current affairs
    • Communicate easily and adequately, in both selected foreign languages, at a minimum level of B2 in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
    • Be proficient in another foreign language
  • Understand and integrate cultural similarities and differences (cultural and intercultural skills)
    • Demonstrate real knowledge of the cultures of the studied languages
    • Be familiar with codes and conventions of other cultures for the sake of interpersonal relationships
    • Develop knowledge in various fields, in particular those aimed at by translation activities
  • Use everyday technology (technological skills)
    • Use standard office software tools and editorial assistance effectively
  • Use lexicographical resources and reference materials to lead linguistic mediation activities individually or as part of a team (professional skills)
    • Use printed or electronic dictionaries and reference materials appropriately

Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of this programme component, students will be able to : -understand specialized documents using appropriate research strategies; -translate them into correct French and where necessary, taking into account the typology and terminology of the concerned domain. They will be able to provide a translation in the foreign language which: - requires little or no revision by a native speaker ; - then render the translation fit for purpose and acceptable on the market.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Translating specialised texts from various domains whether economical, technical, scientific or medical. Use of documentary and terminological resources (CAT). Translation of texts on general subjects and exercises in comparative linguistics. Practical application of learned strategies to produce a natural and true translation in the foreign language. Intensive and careful use of documentation and other linguistic resources meant for native speakers.

T-ALLE-500Written exam (+/- 3h): translation of a +/- 450 word text without dictionnary, in perfect French and without grammar, spelling or meaning mistakes + translation of an official Press Release chosen during a defined timeframe, communicated previously to the students
AND/OR
Oral exam : Sight translation of a +/- 250 word text without dictionnary, in perfect French, without meaning mistakes and at anormal speech rythm

IF ONLINE EXAM : same procedure as for the on site exam but via Moodle.
