Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • 1. Pharmaceutical expertise: Use a foundation of concepts and knowledge in health sciences and pharmaceutical sciences.
    • Understand and integrate the fundamental sciences (chemistry, physics, biology, botany) involved in the specific fields of pharmaceutical sciences
    • Understand how the human body works by using knowledge of anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, immunology, microbiology and pathology under the dual approach of normal and pathological conditions in order to understand the action of medications on the body.
    • Understand the basic concepts of pharmacology and pharmacokinetics
    • Understand compounds for pharmaceutical application regarding their chemical structures, their structure-activity relationships, their physicochemical properties, their origins (synthetic, semi-synthetic, natural), their analytical control methods and their areas of use from a therapeutic point of view.
  • 2. Scientific method: Solve pharmaceutical problems using their knowledge and critical mind.
    • Understand and apply the basic principles of reasoning (obtaining data, analysis, synthesis, comparison, the rule of three, syllogism, analogy, Boolean logic, etc.)
    • Use a hypothesis in inductive, deductive or abductive reasoning
    • Develop a critical, practical and analytical mind
  • 3. Communication: Communicate in an appropriate, efficient, rigorous and respectful way in a professional perspective.
    • Understand the basic rules of French and of English (grammar, punctuation, connectors, etc.).
    • Adapt lexical and syntactic choices in communication register (everyday language, medical language or scientific terminology)
    • Summarise, explain, and argue
    • Share knowledge and information
  • 4. Sense of responsibility: Act ethically and professionally.
    • Be aware of the concept of "pharmaceutical care"
  • 5. Quality: Assess themself, expand their knowledge and adapt their attitude.

Learning Outcomes of UE

* The student must be able to learn several aspects of the drugs used in Belgium, among which their pharmacological and physico-chemical properties, their pratical uses in medicine, how to analyse them
* To understand in a very general way the steps and tools found in the drug development process.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

* Analysis of chemical groups; drug design at the molecular level (molecular pharmacochemistry)
* Systematic study of several pharmaceutical classes (anti-infectious drugs, antitumoral and immunomodulatory drugs).

* Prerequisites : Chimie organique. Pharmacologie générale.

M-CTPH-309A theoretical exam in which the marks will be distributed as follows:
- around 20% for questions on the introduction
- around 10% for questions related to chemistry
- around 70% for questions related to medicines
Warnings regarding the written examination: Each question is scored on 0.5, 1 or 2 depending on the expected level of response. The intermediate mark is calculated from the total marks for the entire examination and then recalculated to 20 for the final mark. Depending on the quality of incorrect response given (eg, errors considered serious in terms of the importance of the covered concepts or their fundamental aspect regarding the level of study) or the quality of expression answers (eg, globaly for the examination: poorly organized answers, not correctly written, or nebulous meaning), additional points may be withdrawn without exceeding 2 on the final mark.
