Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
Understand the notion of chemical equilibrium and be able to apply it to the chemical reactions ; Understand the basis of chemical reactions, with an overall understanding, and be able to make the connection with some daily natural or industrial applications ; Understand the operation of simple electrochemical systems (batteries and electrolyzers) and the mechanisms of metallic corrosion ; Understand how molecular dynamics or the presence of a catalys acts upon the chemical reactions kinetics so as to be able to control it and size up a chemical reactor. Understanding the main unit operations.
UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance
Reminder of the principles of thermodynamics ; reaction tendency ; covalent and metallic bonds ; solid state and band theory ; electrochemistry (batteries, electrolyzers and metallic corrosion) ; coupled reactions; reactor sizing ; catalysis and solvent effects ; unit operations.
Prior Experience
Understanding of the following concepts: chemical bonding ; electrostatic interactions; solute-solvent interactions ; ionic structure ; chemical affinity ; equilibrium constant ; entropy ; enthalpy ; kinetic theory of gases.

I-SDMA-120 | Graded exercise, 20 % of the mark, maximal duration : 2 h (only exercises). Laboratory (reports and laboratory work), 20 % of the mark. Oral examination, 60 % of the mark, maximal duration : 60 min (after receiving the question, the student may read over his course notes for maximum 20 min and afterwards write his answer on transparent slides that he will present. The accent is put on the understanding of phenomena and concepts rather than on the memorization). The overall mark will be calculated by a weighted geometric mean of the different marks (and not a weighted arithmetic mean anymore; more details given during the course). |
