Content of Learning Activity
The course is structured around theoretical teaching and group work. The latter allows students to practice the process of symptomatology and anamnesis through the analysis of a case study.
Theoretical course chapters:
- Survey and representation techniques applied to heritage (from manual stone to stone survey to scanner survey, including photogrammetry and 3D modelling tools). - Study and critical interpretation of documentary sources (paper archives and digital databases). - Analysis of the built environment via archaeological studies of the subsoil and archaeology of the building. Reading and assimilation of results from related scientific approaches (stratigraphic studies, bauforschung). Methods and techniques used for the characterisation of heritage materials and their alterations. - Structural analysis (methodology, investigations, crack formation, monitoring, intervention vs. conservation principles) - Emergency protection measures (shoring and consolidation, protection of archaeological remains). - Descriptions of preliminary tests. In situ and laboratory analyses (absorption, DRMS,...). - Case studies.
Content of the group work:
I. Anamnesis.
1) Location and presentation of the subject of the study. 2) Historical analysis of the site and the building. Genesis and evolution in time and space. 3) Architectural analysis. - Exterior and interior surveys. - Constructional principle. - Typological and stylistic analysis. - Architectural vocabulary. 4) Inventory of previous works and interventions (documentary sources and on-site observation).
II. Symptomathology
5) Mapping: - Materials. - Successive construction phases and transformations. - Alterations of the facades and interiors (if accessible), including cracking of the structures. For this part, the student should use the MDCS (Monument Diagnosis and Conservation System). 6) Hypotheses on the cause of the damage.
III. Master plan
IV. Conservation actions
