Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
Biochemistry is at the frontier of biological science and chemical science. Indeed, biochemistry seeks to understand the chemical basis for all life processes. It is therefore a key discipline in medical, biomedical and pharmaceutical research. Indeed, biochemistry helps to understand biological processes, allows to identify the mechanisms involved in disease and especially allows to better define a treatment. The purpose of this course will be to acquire the basic knowledge of biochemical functions (molecule structure, enzymology, bioenergetic). Knowledges that will then be used to understand and interpret biochemical processes. At the end of this course, students will be able to: · understand the role of the 4 main classes of small organic molecules of the cells (aa, monosaccharides, nucleotides and lipids) in the main biochemical pathways; · understand the acid-base chemistry and the importance of water in the biochemical processes; · interpret the impact of changes in pH on ionizable groups of a peptide or a protein; · understand the concept that the structure of a given biomolecule is directly related to its function; · understand the role and the regulation of enzymes in biochemical reactions; · understand the energetics of life and associate the notion of bio-energy to the metabolic pathways; · integrate the metabolism of glucose in anaerobic or aerobic conditions; · understand the regulation of glucose metabolism; · address without difficulties the course of biochemistry in BA2.
Content of UE
The lecture will be st up in three main parts: I. Reminder of the 4 main classes of small organic molecules of the cells, the water structure, pH and the acid-base chemistry II. Structures and functions of the proteins and enzymes III. The energetics of life, and carbohydrate metabolism and regulation ==> The lecture (face-to-face) will be associated with practical works (supervised work, exercices and e-learning)
