Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
write a comprehensive list of functional requirements; draw up the state-of-the-art; design a mechanical system whose functional principles and kinematic principles are known (the number of parts does not exceed 100, to give an idea of the complexity of the machine to be designed); justify the selection of machine elements; produce a assembly drawing under the formal conventions of technical drawing; write a synthetic report with computation and design notes; defend the project during an oral presentation; respect the standards and safety constraints; develop his/her criticism with regard his/her own design process; be aware of socio-economical and environmental constraints;
Content of UE
This mechanical design project is an individual or collective exercise requiring the synthesis and application of drawing and CAD, manufacturing technology, and machine design. The specifications of the projects are original every year. Some lectures are organized in order to clarify the design methodology and the key role of drawing for design. Some of these projects are conducted in a interuniversty context; these projects follow the requirements of the different institutions implied.
Prior Experience
Theoretical Mechanicsn Structural Design and Strength of Materials, Technical Drawing and CAD, Manufacturing Processes, Machine Design.
Type of Assessment for UE in Q1
Q1 UE Assessment Comments
Mandatory learning activities will be scheduled during the academic year. Reports are required during the progress of the design project. There is no examination during January.
Type of Assessment for UE in Q2
Q2 UE Assessment Comments
Mandatory learning activities will be scheduled during the academic year. Some documents and reports are requested during the second quadrimester, namely to document the presentation scheduled before the Spring Holidays. The evaluation is performed by a panel (members of the department of mechanical engineering plus, as appropriate, in an advisory capacity, industry stakeholders) after presentation and oral defense of the project. The oral defence lasts approximatively 25 minutes: 15 minutes maximum for the presentation, about 10 minutes for questions and answers. On the Wednesday preceding the first day of the session, at noon (12AM) at the latest, every student provides a folder including: one single copy of the scale drawings of the whole mechanical system that has been designed, with sections necessary to define the elements of assemblies for which a complete nomenclature should be prepared; dimensions must not be indicated on these plans, unless specifically requested. A list of drawings will be included in the attached report writing; two copies of a report containing the specifications, the state-of-the-art, the technical justification of the design choices (selection and design of machine elements, ...) and any other specific useful information. Following the presentation, the student provides a CD-ROM with all of SolidWorks files, the written report and the presentation (plus any other useful documents: any computer code, catalogs of machine components or machinery, references ... Interuniversity projects will respect the constraints and rules defined by the different partners. The general requirements formulated in this documents remain valid.
Type of Assessment for UE in Q3
Q3 UE Assessment Comments
Rules are identical to those applied for the first examination assessment, with the exception of the date of delivery of projects, fixed at noon, seven days before the beginning of the examination period (unless otherwise posted rules to the Board of the Deparment of Machine Design and Production).
