Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • 1. Pharmaceutical expertise: Use a foundation of concepts and knowledge in health sciences and pharmaceutical sciences.
    • Understand and integrate the fundamental sciences (chemistry, physics, biology, botany) involved in the specific fields of pharmaceutical sciences
    • Perceive spatial distribution, and understand two- and three-dimensional representations and interconvert them
    • Understand the chronology of a phenomenon and master the time scales and their representations
  • 2. Scientific method: Solve pharmaceutical problems using their knowledge and critical mind.
    • Understand and apply the basic principles of reasoning (obtaining data, analysis, synthesis, comparison, the rule of three, syllogism, analogy, Boolean logic, etc.)
    • Use a hypothesis in inductive, deductive or abductive reasoning
  • 3. Communication: Communicate in an appropriate, efficient, rigorous and respectful way in a professional perspective.
    • Understand the basic rules of French and of English (grammar, punctuation, connectors, etc.).
    • Use a rich vocabulary linking concepts and words accurately
    • Adapt lexical and syntactic choices in communication register (everyday language, medical language or scientific terminology)
    • Summarise, explain, and argue
    • Work in a team
    • Share knowledge and information
  • 4. Sense of responsibility: Act ethically and professionally.
    • Base their reasoning on the data from the scientific literature
    • Respect the diversity of gender, culture and opinion
    • Show loyalty and scientific honesty (in teamwork and in respecting the results and the work of others)
  • 5. Quality: Assess themself, expand their knowledge and adapt their attitude.
    • Manage time
    • Prioritise
    • Research, read, interpret, and critique a scientific paper with sufficient knowledge of scientific English
    • Compare different sources of information

Learning Outcomes of UE

Students will complete their knowledge on the gene expression as well as on protein functions. Therefore, at the end of the lecture, the basic principles associated with the genetic material will be acquired. The lecture will discuss new concepts and advanced methodologies in the area of molecular biology, including the new generation sequencing. Theoretical concepts will help the students to extract information from public databases (internet) and understand published scientific results. During practical work in laboratory, they will perform several techniques such as cloning and manipulation of recombinant DNA (PCR, cloning, determination and computer analysis of sequences).

Content of UE

The lecture will concern : After a review of the structure of DNA, its modifications and gene expression ( replication , transcription, translation and compensation ), the course will cover the main techniques related to molecular biology , the genetic engineering ( electrophoresis of DNA , DNA cloning , restriction enzyme , ...) to transgenesis ; but also more modern techniques derived from the discovery of the human genome as microarray DNA , or pharmacogenomics techniques that lead us towards personalized medicine . The student will learn (1) how to understand and perform an experimental protocol, (2) how to analyse data and look for information on internet, (3) how to set up the best strategy to answer a scientific question. Moreover, including in the course entitled “From gene to therapy: an integrated approach », the students will have reminders of the specific biochemistry notions to realize the work. Demonstration of the use of different databases requisite to realize the work. Group exercise on a specific case from a gene acronym and a pathology.
