Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
Interpret the results of modelling with a critical mind; Interact with the people responsible for modelling to improve its quality ; Extract the significant data of a process to prepare modelling;
Being familiar with the most important modeling methods and their domains of application. Approach to mathematical modeling by concrete examples from chemical engineering and materials science.
Being conscient of the role of modeling in industry and of the validation of models by experimental data (by the way of design of experiments).
Content of UE
Basics of data analysis; Introduction to design of experiments; Physical and analytical modeling methods (including ab initio methods); Numérical modeling methods: finite elements and finite differences, Monte-Carlo methods, neural networks.
Prior Experience
Not applicable
Type of Assessment for UE in Q2
Q2 UE Assessment Comments
Group projects (3 students): 3 to 5 short projects illustrating various types of modelling. Grading based on the choice of modelling approach, results and scientific exactness of explanations, as well adaptation of the report to thc cibled public (different for each project). 30% of total grade.
Oral exam: critical discussion of a scientific paper on a related subject. The paper is sent to the students at least 2 weeks before the exam. The student must write a summary (in French) of the paper that is due during the oral exam. Grading is as follow: written summary: 20% of global grade (content, structure); understanding of methods and phenomena: 40%; critical discussion of results and methods: 10%. duration: 30 minutes.
Type of Assessment for UE in Q3
