Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
At the end of the instruction, the students will be able to:<br style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;" /><br style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;" />1) To be aware that nature conservation is of philosophical and political choices.
2) Identifying and knowing the main causes of biodiversity loss<br style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;" />3) Knowing the main techniques used to preserve or restore natural and semi-natural areas; knowing when and how to apply them.<br style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;" />4) Knowing the main aspects of the belgian and european legislation in regards to nature preservation (spirit of the law and main legislation).
Content of UE
The lecture is devoted to the study of legal constraints and management techniques that can be applied to protected area in Europe and Belgium. The key themes discussed during the lectures are:<br style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;" />a) the main threats to biodiversity; <br style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;" />b) the legal framework that applies to nature conservation;<br style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;" />c) the theorical foundations dealing with nature conservation (island biogeography, metapopulations,..)<br style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;" />d) the main semi-natural area that can be found in Belgium
e) the main techniques that are used for the management of natural habitats<br type="_moz" />
Prior Experience
Good knowledge of european flora and fauna; good knowledge of ecosystems (soil, vegetation, recolonisation, etc.)
