Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Implement an engineering approach dealing with a set problem taking into account technical, economic and environmental constraints
    • Identify and describe the problem to be solved and the functional need (of prospective clients) to be met considering the state of technology
  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in science and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
    • Identify, describe and explain the basic principles of engineering particularly in their specialising field
    • Select and rigorously apply knowledge, tools and methods in sciences and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
  • Collaborate, work in a team
    • Interact effectively with other students to carry out collaborative projects.
  • Communicate in a structured way - both orally and in writing, in French and English - giving clear, accurate, reasoned information
    • Present analysis or experiment results in laboratory reports
  • Demonstrate thoroughness and independence throughout their studies
    • Develop their scientific curiosity and open-mindedness

Learning Outcomes of UE

Use of the tools of materials thermodynamics; Understanding of the verious steps of the extraction of metals from their ore; Understanding and justification of the process routes for the extraction of various metals.

Content of UE

Part 1 - Materials thermodynamics: Phase diagrams (binary and ternary) ; Ellingham diargams; Potential-pH diagrams; Stability diagrams. Ionic solutions; chemical activity. Part 2 - Principles and practice of extractive metallurgy: selection and preparation of ores; Methods for metal reduction; Refining processes; Case studies for the most used metals.

  • Presentation and works
  • Oral examination
  • Quoted exercices

Q1 UE Assessment Comments

Laboratory work and industrial visits, 10 % of the mark. grading takes in account the presentation of reports as well as the exactitude of explanations.Graded exercise, 25 % of the mark, maximum duration : 120 min (various levels of difficulties : exercises solved during the course but new, and questions needing a more thorough reflection).Oral examination, 65 % of the mark, maximum duration : 60 min (same questions for all students).
