      Objectives of general skills

      • Implement an engineering approach dealing with a set problem taking into account technical, economic and environmental constraints
        • Understand the stages of an engineering approach
        • Identify and describe the problem to be solved and the functional need (of the project owner) to be met considering the state of technology
        • Communicate the approach, results and prospects to a project owner or a board
        • Identify and acquire the information and skills needed to solve the problem
      • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in arts, science, engineering and construction to solve problems involving these disciplines
        • Identify, describe and explain the basic principles of engineering sciences and construction
        • Select and thoroughly apply knowledge, methods and tools in arts, sciences, engineering sciences and construction to solve problems involving these disciplines
      • Communicate in a structured way - visually, orally and in writing, in French and English - giving clear, accurate, and reasoned information
        • Argue to and persuade a project owner, teachers and a board orally, with visual aids and in writing
        • Use several methods of written and graphic communication: text, tables, equations, sketches, maps, graphs, etc.
        • Give an effective oral presentation, using presentation materials appropriately

      UE's Learning outcomes

This environmental and water treatment course will allow students to: - Understand the impact of human activity on the environment; - Describe the main sources of pollution; - Interpret waste water analysis reports based sanitation standards; - Describe the techniques of collective and individual treatment of urban wastewater; - Implement processes or technologies that reduce environmental impacts as part of their project.

      UE Content

The course content is organised into two parts. The first is based on the description of ecosystems, aqueous and gaseous pollution, impacts of human activities on the environment and on ecosystems. The second part is dedicated to the study of the properties of natural water and aqueous pollution, environmental legislation in the field of urban wastewater. The individual and collective treatment of water for drinking and sanitation are discussed: primary (mechanical and physico-chemical), secondary (biological / chemical) and tertiary treatment (elimination of nitrogen and phosphorus), treatment of sludge, and individual purification stations.

      Prior experience

The knowledge of the physical chemistry, organic chemistry and chemical reaction conceptsi s needed for this course unit.
