      Objectives of general skills

      • Understand the fundamentals (theories and tools) in human and social sciences
        • Identify and explain the basic theoretical trends in various fields of human sciences (law, economics, management, history, psychology, etc.) and their applications.
        • Understand the social environment and the way it works, as well as the role played by different social, economic and political agents
      • Understand the fundamentals in the field of sociology and anthropology (Sociology and Anthropology option)
        • Have a critical view of theories, concepts and methods specific to sociology and anthropology.
        • Avoid the pitfalls of ethnocentrism, sociocentrism and chronocentrisme.
      • Master knowledge from disciplines within social and human sciences.
        • Identify and explain the basic theories in political sciences and social sciences.
        • Understand the tools and methods adapted to these disciplines.
      • Apply transferable skills, such as analysis and critical thinking, thoroughness, independence, and teamwork
        • Demonstrate a critical mind, ethical values and independent judgment issues of human and social sciences.

      UE's Learning outcomes

      At the end of the class, the students will be able to: 

      -   describe the evolution of the anthropological science in function of its political and historical context; 
      -   give examples of operating fields for anthropology; 
      -   summarize the theoretical input of founding authors of the discipline; 
      -   define basic concepts in anthropology; 
      -   be aware of the importance of vocabulary in the construction of a discourse over the others; 
      -   show the role of anthropology in the understanding of the world and in conflicts resolution; 
      -   illustrate the diversity of behaviors and motivations of human societies through case studies;
      -  participate actively in work and dicussion group (10 tot 15 first year students with a third year student, the tutor);
      -  read and understand a sociological or anthropological paper, to summarize informations, to presente and discute these with group members -write a structured work, in accordance with academic norms.    

      UE Content

      Beginnings of anthropology, operating fields of the discipline, characteristics and methods, anthropology as a translation of the world, the total social fact, theories and founding authors, mistakes of anthropologists, rites of passage, marriage, kinship and locality, birth rites and name giving, reproductive fluids, purity and representations, the anthropologie of art, ethnopsychiatry and applied anthropology, the culturality of emotions, orality and writing, bodily techniques.

      Peer tutoring sessions Under the responsability of third year student and the professor supervision : getting to know other students, methodological advices, sharing of experience, group work about sociological or anthropological paper, assessed presentation and written work in accordance with instructions (academic norms) -tutor assistance-    <br type="_moz" />
