Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the fundamentals
    • Have a good knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of physics and of the role of models and theories.
    • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of mathematics suitable for the study of physics, and be able to use this mathematics in applications in the field of physics
    • Undertake further study having already acquired and enhanced the necessary learning skills

    • Communicate complex information to a qualified scientific partner

    • Have developed generic skills that are applicable in other contexts, especially a basic knowledge of chemistry, the use of the English language and understanding programming techniques

    • Solve simple problems in the context of physics by identifying their basic aspects and by using both appropriate theoretical and experimental methods

Learning Outcomes of UE

By the end of the course, the student should be able to master Maxwell's equations in their manifestly and non-manifestly relativistic invariant forms. He/she should be able to solve them in simple situations, by using the various mathematical tools introduced, like vector calculus, Green's functions and distributions, separation of variables, etc.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Maxwell equations in non relativistic and relativistic forms. Lorentz and gauge invariances. Plane waves. Electrostatic. Magnetostatic. Electrostatic of dielectrics. Oscillating dipole and radiation. Retarded potential. Energy-momentum tensor. Wave guides, emission of electromagnetic waves by relativistic accelerated charges.

Prior Experience

General Physics, Analysis, Linear Algebra, Special Relativity and tensor calculus.
