Objectives of general skills

  • Describe, organise, analyse and prioritise the phenomena observed in the medical field
    • Understand the expression of biological realities in absolute or relative terms, the orders of magnitude, proportions and probability
    • Understand and apply mathematical translations of large models and biological phenomena through abstract reasoning
    • Understand and use different graphical representations of numerical values and their relationships
    • Perceive spatial distribution, and understand two- and three-dimensional representations and interconvert them
    • Understand the chronology of a phenomenon and master the time scales and their representations
  • Control the molecular, morphological and functional approaches of normal and pathological conditions
    • Describe these states and technical examinations to quantify them in different approaches, as well as describe the operational characteristics of these examinations
    • Integrate concepts from these different approaches in a complex biomedical problem
    • Explain the relationships between molecular, morphological and functional changes and pathological conditions, their clinical signs and symptoms
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills developed within a medical context
    • Understand the basic rules of French (grammar, punctuation, connectors, etc)
    • Use a rich vocabulary accurately linking concepts and words, and understand the prefixes and suffixes used in the medical field
    • Adapt lexical and syntactic choices in communication register (everyday language, medical language or scientific terminology)
    • Summarise, explain, and argue
    • Listen and empathise
    • Work in a team
  • Develop reasoning skills
    • Understand and apply the basic principles of reasoning (obtaining data, analysis, synthesis, comparison, the rule of three, syllogism, analogy, Boolean logic, etc)
    • Understand and apply Bayesian inference
    • Use a hypothesis in inductive, deductive or abductive reasoning
    • Develop critical thinking, test and monitor conclusions understanding the area of validity, and explore alternative hypotheses
    • Integrate reasoning in clinical approaches
    • Manage doubt and uncertainty
  • Manage resources
    • Manage time
    • Prioritise
    • Understand the organisation of the health system and its social dimension
    • Integrate an economic dimension in clinical reasoning
  • Manage their studies
    • Have developed an interest for medicine
    • Locate scientific information efficiently
    • Read, interpret, and critique a scientific article
    • Compare different sources of information
  • Be a responsible practitioner
    • Base reasoning on the data taken from scientific literature (evidence-based-medicine)
    • Respect the diversity of gender, culture and opinion
    • Integrate an ethical dimension in their reasoning
    • Be loyal to the facts, to the team, to intellectual property, confidentiality, etc

UE's Learning outcomes

The course of Human Biology is intended to lay the basics in biology and more particularly in the field of Cytology and Genetics, but also the diversity of the living world, the molecules of life and the Evolution. It allows students to build a framework in which they can relate notions learned in specialized courses (histology, biochemistry, physiology, ...) whhcih they will encounter later in their training.
More generally, the objectives of this course aims to develop skills of observation and reasoning, learning the importance of scientific rigor and develop an analytical mind capable of integrating information and applying their logic in different contexts.

UE Content

1) Theoretical course (50h)
Volume I: The characteristics of living, Cytology, Biochemistry of the cell, Bacteria and Viruses, Protists, Fungi, Plants and Animals
Volume II: Man, tissues, organs and their functions, Nutrition
Volume III: Heredity and Genetics, Diseases and Immune System

2) Workshops (cases - observaitons - discusion) (10h)

3) Practicals (8h)

Prior experience

The candidates must be able to express themselves clearly and correctly in French, both orally and in writing. They must demonstrate their ability to understand, reason, and demonstrate a spirit of synthesis
The candidates must also master all prerequisites of biology, namely:
1. The different structural levels of living
2. Constituents of living
3. Structure of eubacteria and plant and animal cells
4. The organization of the vertebrate body
5. The diversity and uniqueness of the living world
6. The relationships between living things
7. Ecosystems
