Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Skill 1: Have acquired highly specialised and integrated knowledge and broad skills inbiological sciences, adding to those covered in the Bachelor's programme in biological sciences.
  • Skill 2: Have acquired professional skills relating to the degree.
    • Apply, mobilise, articulate and promote the knowledge and skills acquired in order to contribute to the achievement of research project in biology.
    • Master the complexity of such work and take into account the objectives and constraints which characterise it.
  • Skill 3: Conduct extensive research and development projects related to biological sciences.
    • Apply, mobilise, articulate and promote the knowledge and skills acquired in order to help lead and complete a project.
    • Work alone or in teams to understand unprecedented problems in biological sciences and their applications.
  • Skill 4: Master communication techniques.
    • Communicate, in English both orally and in writing, their findings, original proposals, knowledge and underlying principles, in a clear, structured and justified manner.
    • Adapt their communication to a variety of audiences.
  • Skill 5: Develop and integrate a high degree of autonomy.
    • Aquire new knowledge independently.
    • Pursue further training and develop new skills independently.
    • Develop and integrate a high degree of autonomy to evolve in new contexts.
  • Skill 6: Apply scientific methodology.
    • Critically reflect on the impact of their discipline in general, and on the contribution to projects.
    • Demonstrate thoroughness, independence, creativity, intellectual honesty, and ethical values.

Learning Outcomes of UE

The control of gene expression is an important mechanism of molecular biology, allowing to understand how an organism can control the amount of protein needed for its optimal functioning. At the end of the course, the students are able to describe the mechanisms allowing a cell to adapt the mechanisms of gene transcription and mRNA translation according to its needs and environmental factors as well as to describe the basic techniques that allow to highlight of DNA/protein and protein/protein interactions. At the end of this course the students will have acquired a reading key to follow the domain of transcription regulation. They will be able to understand and to analyze  high level articles published in international scientific journals

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

The induction and repression systems as key elements in the control ofgene expression are taught from the simplest organism (lactose operon) to more complex systems such as mammals (regulation hormonal).
