Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
The course aims to introduce students to bioinformatics so that they can understand the basic concepts of the field as well as the different methods discussed in scientific publications. In parallel, the practical sessions will allow students to concretely consider bioinformatics analyses related to sequence searches and annotations, differential expression from transcriptomic data or visualization of genomic data on a GenomeBrowser.
UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance
Theoretical courses (50%)
- General introduction: Mathematical reality VS biological reality
- Biological sequences, Databases...
- Sequence alignments
- How to "query" public databases
- Next generation sequencing methods (NGS)
- Transcriptome & Genome
- Practical applications & Biologist's questions
Practical sessions & exercises (50%)
- Sequence search, sequence homology, functional annotations (Online tools: NCBI, Expasy, Galaxy platform...)
- Differential expression analysis from RNA-Seq data & Visualization of expression data (Online tools: Galaxy platform, Degust, MetaboAnalyst...)
- Visualization of genomic data using a Genome Browser (IGV, online servers...)
Prior Experience
Concepts of biochemistry; handling of a personal computer and Internet.
