Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
The aim of this course is to provide students with the basic environmental economics toolkit so as to enable them to analyse the relationship between environmental problems and economic policy and to assess specific policy choices in this field. The course also includes a critical review of the application of economic theory to environmental problems and a discussion of alternative approaches.
UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance
The course will cover the following topics:
Welfare economics and the environment, optimal pollution levels, environmental policy instruments (command and control, taxes, tradable permits, voluntary approaches), cost benefit analysis, climate change and international trade, economic and environmental accounts, footprint analysis, sustainability, international negotiations on environmental problems and institutional aspects.
Two short essays (2-3 pages) on questions related to subjects covered in the course (applications).
