Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Address literature and interact within other scientific fields
    • Have sufficient knowledge of English in order to read and understand scientific texts, especially in the field of mathematics.

Learning Outcomes of UE

  At the term of this course, students will be capable to
- use in context English grammar notions; 
- extract information from science-oriented English texts;
- use this information to write scientific content;
- put into practice the rules of English pronunciation;
- master the theory of oral and written scientific English;
- be able to apply this theory to specific contexts;
- analyse a scientific article in English;
- deliver a scientific presentation in English.

- Oral and written communication;
- Self-evaluation;
- Individual work;
- Introduction to pronunciation and oral communication (presentations);
- typical structures in oral and written scientific English (theory and exercises);
- Analysis of scientific articles;
- Questions/answers;
- Scientific presentations.

Compulsory course attendance. Absences are accepted in case of force majeure (disease, death of a relative, etc.). Scheduling clashes or paid work do not constitute a case of force majeure for this course. What constitutes a force majeure can be further discussed with the lecturer and, if required, the faculty authorities.
 

Method of calculating the overall mark for the Q1 UE assessment

Term 1: 40 points (out of 100 - final grade)

A. Course attendance (theory + practice): 10 points
B. Two summaries (one popularised article and one scientific article) + at least two compulsory peer assessments: 10 points
C. Final paper (including summaries submitted in B.) + at least two compulsory peer assessments: 20 points

Not attending one or several activities (theory and/or practice) and/or failing to take one or several assignments result in a fail grade (0/40) for the whole first term (AA1).
