Programme component

Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the fundamentals
    • Have a good knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of physics and of the role of models and theories.
  • Collaborate and work in a team
    • Have developed practical skills in physics through practical sessions in the laboratory, including error analysis and critical evaluation of experimental results, and sessions during which they have worked individually and in groups.

Learning Outcomes of UE

- Basic experimental nuclear physics and radioprotection.

- Basis on instrumentation (Geiger counters, scintillation detectors) and their operation for data taking and analysis (counting and spectrometry)

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Nuclear physics - course :
- nuclei: structure, size, nuclear forces, binding energy, liquid drop model, stability valley
- nuclear instability: decay law, units, alpha, beta (+ - EC), gamma decays
- low energy nuclear reactions: kinematic, composite nucleus, cross section, resonance, radioisotope production;
- fission
- particles through matter: charged heavy particles, electrons, photons, neutrons
- ionizing radiation detectors

Labs
-  Geiger counter operation
-  radioactive decay law
-  natural radioactivity study
-  gamma spectrometry
-  gamma absorption in matter
