Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Acquire, understand and use knowledge in the fields of biology and other fields
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the general principles of life to understand questions and solve situations related to biology
    • Synthesise and summarise, in a critical way, information from scientific literature in different forms (textual, numerical, verbal and graphic)
  • Solve issues relevant to biology
    • Have developed practical skills in the various fields of biology through practical sessions in the laboratory and in the field, during which they have worked individually or in groups
    • Make accurate observations in the context of activities in the field and in the laboratory
    • Grasp and use the usual methods the conservation of live materials
    • Analyse and interpret, in an appropriate way, biological data collected in natura, through dissection or based on an experimental protocol in the laboratory
  • Apply a scientific approach and critical thinking
    • Understand and apply the basic principles of reasoning (obtaining data, analysis, synthesis, comparison, rule of three, syllogism, analogy, etc.)
    • Work with efficiency / accuracy / precision
    • Develop critical thinking, test and monitor conclusions understanding the domain of validity, and explore alternative hypotheses
  • Develop autonomy, set training objectives and make choices to achieve them
    • Organise time and work, individually and in groups
    • Prioritise
    • Manage stress regardless of events (exams, presentations, etc.)

Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of the lectures and practical work sessions in zoology, the student will acquire a good knowledge of the following elements:

-Understanding the structural plans of large invertebrate animal phyla allowing a comparison of the structures and functions of their organs and systems (e.g. integuments, sensory organs, life cycles, respiratory system, circulatory system, digestive system, excretory system, reproductive system, locomotion,...).
-Understanding the classification of the animal kingdom (protozoans, porifers, cnidarians, triploblastic proto and deuterostomes)
-Mastery of the dissection techniques for different invertebrates and correct illustration of the investigated organisms.
-Ability to identify and classify an unknown organism based on anatomical features.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

The Zoology course will focus on exploring the classification of the invertebrates and the structural plans of the different phyla, from protozoans to the first chorded deuterostomes. For each investigated phylum, the structure and function of the different organs and systems will be described with a focus on life cycles, integument, sensory organs, locomotion and their different associated systems (digestive, reproductive, excretory, circulatory, respiratory,...). Many illustrations will help to understand the biodiversity associated with each phylum.
