Programme component

Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the fundamentals
    • Have a good knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of physics and of the role of models and theories.
  • Collaborate and work in a team
    • Have developed practical skills in physics through practical sessions in the laboratory, including error analysis and critical evaluation of experimental results, and sessions during which they have worked individually and in groups.
  • Have a rigorous scientific approach
    • Solve simple problems in the context of physics by identifying their basic aspects and by using both appropriate theoretical and experimental methods

Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of the instruction, the students will be able to :
- understand and apply the basic principles of physics (classical mechanics, geometrical optics, thermodynamics)
- develop the theory from observations in a logical and rigorous way
- develop models with a scientific and mathematical approach

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Mechanics : kinematics, dynamics, work, energy, momentum, center of mass, rotation, torque, angular momentum, gravitation.
Geometrical optics : reflection, refraction, mirrors, lenses, optical instruments, vision.
Thermodynamics : temperature, ideal gases, first law, kinetic theory, second law.

Prior Experience

Basic mathematics (derivation, integration, trigonometry)

Type(s) and mode(s) of Q1 UE assessment

  • Oral examination - Face-to-face
  • Graded assignment(s) - Face-to-face
  • Practical exam - Face-to-face

Q1 UE Assessment Comments

Practical classes and/or sessions of exercises are the object of a continuous certificative evaluation. For practical classes, it consists of the face-to-face evaluation of the participation in laboratories. Reports will be considered only in case of effective participation of the student. For the sessions of exercices classes, the evaluation is made during quoted exercises. In every case, an unjustified absence of the student by a medical certificate will entail a nil note.
