Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Implement an engineering approach dealing with a set problem taking into account technical, economic and environmental constraints
    • Design, evaluate and optimise solutions addressing the problem
    • Implement a chosen solution in the form of a drawing, a schema, a plan, a model, a prototype, software and/or digital model

Learning Outcomes of UE

This course introduces the principles of model-driven object-oriented software development. At the end of the course, the student should:
- understand the importance, needs and specificities of software engineering activities (such as requirements analysis, design, implementation and testing);
- understand the importance and principles of software modeling, model simulation, model execution and code generation;
- use the UML modeling language for analysing and designing software systems;
- use advanced object-oriented software development concepts such as design patterns;
- Know how to use advanced concepts of the Java programming language (such as Collections, lambdas, etc.) and the design of GUIs;
- understand the importance of software testing, and be able to use unit testing in practice.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

The UE is composed of two learning activities (see details in the ECTS sheets of each learning activity).

The first learning activity focuses on the aspects of object-oriented software modelling using the UML modelling language. The following visual notations (diagrams) will be studied in theory and put into practice: use case diagrams and semi-structured usage scenarios, class diagrams, sequence diagrams, interaction diagrams, behavioural state diagrams. If time permits, simulation and execution of models will also be covered, as well as meta-modelling and automatic code generation.

The second learning activity focuses on advanced aspects of object-oriented development using a recent version of the Java programming language. It will cover data structures (Collections in Java), functional and parallel programming (lambdas, streams, and threads in Java), GUI user interface development, as well as exception handling. It will also address synchronization between code and UML models, object-oriented design patterns, and unit tests.

Prior Experience

Data Structures and Algorithms
Object Oriented Methodology
The student should have a good prior knowledge of the object-oriented programming paradigm, as well as practical experience with the object oriented programming.
