Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
Master concepts of Physics in the field of wave phenomena, special theory of relativity, quantum physics and nuclear physics;
Identify and explain wave characteristics;
Describe Doppler effect;
Use Fourier analysis to study waves;
Establish and discuss electromagnetic wave equation starting from Maxwell's equations;
Explain electromagnetic radiation sources;
Explain methods allowing to polarize electromagnetic radiation;
Express, explain and justify mathematically physical consequences of superposition of coherent waves : interferences, diffraction, standing waves, beating,...
Explain the limits of classical physics ;
Express principles of special theory of relativity ;
Establish and discuss fundamental equations of relativity;
Describe using one dimensional wave mechanics formalism the behavior of particles in various potentials, and quantum tunnelling;
Describe steps leading to solution of Schrödinger equation for hydrogen atom;
Explain radioactive decay, fission and fusion mechanisms;
Describe nuclear models;
Use atomic mass and half-time tables ;
Apply in exercises and in practical works theoretical concepts.
UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance
AA Waves phenomena and Modern Physics
Waves: Definitions and generalities; Superposition and decomposition; Electromagnetic waves - Electromagnetic spectrum; Polarization: Crystal optics; Diffraction and interferences.
Special theory of relativity: history (Michelson-Morley experiment); kinematics (Lorentz transformation, Einstein's principles, Space and time relativity, Twin paradox, Doppler effect, velocity and acceleration transformation equations), electromagnetic field relativity, dynamics (Relativistic mass, Total energy, Equivalence of Mass and Energy), Minkowski space.
Introduction to quantum mechanics and atomic physics: experimental evidences, quantification, duality, Schrödinger equation, 1D problems, central potential, kinetic momentum, Hydrogen atom.
Nuclear physics: properties of nuclei, nuclear force, nuclear models, stability, natural radioactivity and decay process, radioactive series, fission, fusion.
