Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in science and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
    • Identify, describe and explain the basic principles of engineering particularly in their specialising field
    • Understand laboratory techniques: testing, measuring, monitoring protocol, and security
    • Select and rigorously apply knowledge, tools and methods in sciences and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines

Learning Outcomes of UE

Know the main families of materials, their usual properties, and their life cycles.
Know how to apply a rational method of material selection in a design process.
Know how to describe the structural organization of crystalline solids.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Concept of materials: Definition, history, classification.
Mechanical properties of materials: Elasticity, plasticity, toughness, stiffness, hardness.
Influence of temperature: Evolution of mechanical properties; thermal expansion.
Processes of material elaboration and links with the selection of materials.
Creation of an object: Link with the categories of materials from a properties point of view, design approach and selection strategy according to Ashby.
Material selection: Selection strategy and case studies.
Energy and resources: Definitions of green and renewable energies; concepts of resources, reserves, and wealth and availability of mineral resources; links with the Environment course.
The life cycle of materials: Life cycle analysis of materials, Eco-Audit, and environmental awareness, links with the Sustainable Development Goals.
End of life of materials and waste management: Advantages and disadvantages of recycling, waste and secondary raw materials, and materials recycling.
Structure of crystalline materials: Symmetry of crystal lattices; examples of crystal structures; The defects in real crystalline solids.
Phase diagram concept: Examples of binary diagrams
The course addresses climate and environmental issues and focuses on societal, environmental, and climate transitions.

AATerm 2 Assessment - comments
I-SDMA-023The assessment consists of three parts.
(1) Week 7 test: online test on the "Properties of materials" section. It is graded on 5 points and the 5 points for the "properties of materials" part of the written exam may be waived if the student obtains at least 2.5 points and if he/she so requests; (2) Reports on the practical work sessions; (3) Written exam; Duration of the exam: 3 hours; Exam including theory and exercises, as well as the content covered during the practical work. A calculator is required.
Weighting:
(case 1) if the mark in the written examination is greater than or equal to 8/20, the final mark is made up of 80% of the examination mark and 20% of the practical work mark; (case 2) if the mark in the written examination is strictly less than 8/20, the final mark is equal to the examination mark.
