Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • In the field of biological sciences and particularly in the field of the biology of organisms and ecology, possess highly specialised and integrated knowledge and a wide range of skills adding to those covered in the Bachelor's programme in biological sciences.

Learning Outcomes of UE

This training session allows students to learn, from a practical point of view, the techniques of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It consists of a theoretical introduction, demonstrations, and practicals during which the student has to prepare, observe ans photograph a sample of his/her choice in SEM.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

The training session lasts for one week. The first day is dedicated to theoretical aspects (functioning of the microscopes, sample preparation) and to demonstrations of both types of microscopes (SEM and TEM). The remaining of the week focus on the practical aspects: sample preparation (critical point drying, sputter coating), training to the use of the SEM and sample observation. For this last part, each student works individually with an instructor.
