Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Manage and lead research, development and innovation projects.
    • Understand unprecedented problems in biological sciences, and more specifically in the biology of organisms, ecology and its applications.
    • Organise and lead a research, development or innovation project to completion.
    • Methodically research valid scientific information, critically analyse, propose and argue potentially innovative solutions to targeted problems.
  • Master communication techniques.
    • Communicate, both orally and in writing, their findings, original proposals, knowledge and underlying principles, in a clear, structured and justified manner.
    • Master the techniques of written and oral scientific communication in both French and English.
  • Apply scientific methodology.
    • Critically reflect on the impact of their discipline in general, and on the contribution to projects.
    • Demonstrate thoroughness, independence, creativity, intellectual honesty, and ethical values.

Learning Outcomes of UE

The aim of this course is to acquire an in-depth vision of the different methods of monitoring and measuring biodiversity in different types of natural environments, and the interest of these methods for conservation.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

General knowledge of biodiversity and the main threats to it and its ecosystem services in the context of global change. Main indices to describe the state of a population or a community in ecosystems, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Biodiversity measurement and monitoring methods on different spatio-temporal scales. We will focus on new technologies such as remote sensing methods. The practical work will include in-depth applications of the methods seen in class, through concrete case studies.
