Programme component

Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the fundamentals
    • Understand the key areas of chemistry: inorganic, organic, physical, biological and analytical chemistry, as well as basic knowledge required in mathematics, biology and physics
    • Provide basic knowledge in more specialised fields of chemistry (e.g. in theoretical chemistry, chemistry of materials, macromolecular chemistry)
  • Have a rigorous scientific approach
    • Gather and interpret relevant scientific data and critically analyse it considering scientific, ethical and environmental aspects

Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of this course students will be able to understand, theoritically and experimentally,  organism-environment relationships through the fundamental principles of metabolism and energy conservation.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Theoritically and partical notions of metabolism including:

General relationships organism-environment
Catabolism and anabolism : definitions
Flow of matter and energy. Basic thermodynamics.
Introduction to regulation.
Polysaccharides metabolism. The central pathways of energy metabolism .
Lipid metabolism : fatty acids.
Protein metabolism : amino acids
Nucleotides anabolism.

Prior Experience

Biochemistry and organic chemistry

Type(s) and mode(s) of Q1 UE assessment

  • Oral examination - Face-to-face

Q1 UE Assessment Comments

The weighting between the AAs of Q1 and Q2 is 50/50 (grades of the continuous assessments, see corresponding AA). A minimum of 8/20 must be obtained in each SA, otherwise the lowest SA grade is used for the final grade of the UE. In the event of failure, it will not be possible to carry over an AA grade from one year to the next.

Method of calculating the overall mark for the Q1 UE assessment

The weighting between the AAs of Q1 and Q2 is 50/50 (grades of the continuous assessments, see corresponding AA). A minimum of 8/20 must be obtained in each SA, otherwise the lowest SA grade is used for the final grade of the UE. In the event of failure, it will not be possible to carry over an AA grade from one year to the next.
