Learning Outcomes of UE

The course aims to introduce the students to the specificity of philosophical questioning and provide them with an art knowledge base in general philosophy that will help them develop their critical faculties, to refine their methods of reasoning and to adopt a reflexive stance on the construction of knowledge within Human Sciences.
This course thus has a transversal interest. It trains in the scientific approach, by developing critical and conceptual skills such as:
1) problematization or the art of identifying what in a situation or a case is problematic and what is at stake
2) conceptualization or the ability to historically specify and contextualize the concepts to translate them into real tools for reflection, which will ultimately make it possible to build a solid personal judgment on a given question
3) argumentation or the ability to analyze and reproduce both valid and impactful arguments, to highlight worldviews or values underlying a reasoning, as well as the presuppositions of a thesis or an opinion.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

The course presents an introduction to the philosophical and ethical approach, through a problematic approach to philosophical specificity as a reflective activity, a journey through the history and concepts of philosophy, as well as an openness to contemporary ethical questions. The course is structured through an approach that is both thematic and chronological. The first part is devoted to the question "Why philosophy?" ". After an introduction which allows to situate the discipline and its stakes through contemporary resources, it approaches the ancient philosophy. The second part examines the question "How do we think?" It is approached from philosophers of modernity, both to expose it as a break through which the categories of thought we inherit are forged, both to look at the way in which its various authors approach the issue of knowledge. The third and last part addresses the question "What to do with philosophy today? It is devoted to an opening towards contemporary ethical and political questions.
