Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Describe, organise, analyse and prioritise the phenomena observed in the medical field
    • Understand the chronology of a phenomenon and master the time scales and their representations
  • Control the molecular, morphological and functional approaches of normal and pathological conditions
    • Describe these states and technical examinations to quantify them in different approaches, as well as describe the operational characteristics of these examinations
    • Integrate concepts from these different approaches in a complex biomedical problem
    • Explain the relationships between molecular, morphological and functional changes and pathological conditions, their clinical signs and symptoms
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills developed within a medical context
    • Use a rich vocabulary accurately linking concepts and words, and understand the prefixes and suffixes used in the medical field
    • Summarise, explain, and argue
  • Develop reasoning skills
    • Develop critical thinking, test and monitor conclusions understanding the domain of validity, and explore alternative hypotheses
    • Integrate reasoning in clinical approaches
  • Manage resources
    • Manage time
    • Prioritise
  • Promote health
    • Understand a global approach to health incorporating prevention and screening
    • Identify community health problems in the various teachings
  • Manage their studies
    • Have developed an interest for medicine
  • Be a responsible practitioner
    • Base reasoning on the data taken from scientific literature (evidence-based-medicine)
    • Integrate a human dimension in their approach to the patient

Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of the course, the student will have acquired basic notions in medical microbiology and in the biological diagnosis of human infections caused by parasites and mycoses.
The objectives of the course will be to:
1) To know the main microorganisms that can infect humans, their main biological characteristics, the main clinical forms of associated infections and their epidemiological importance.
2) To understand the relationships of these microorganisms with humans (microbial ecology, vectors, colonization/invasion mechanisms, pathogenicity and virulence, evasion of host defenses).
3) To know the modes of transmission of pathogens to humans and understand infection control and prevention strategies.
4) To know the main methods of diagnosing infectious agents and understand their limitations and hierarchy of use.
5) To know the major groups of antimicrobial drugs, their principles of action, mechanisms of resistance in microorganisms, epidemiology of resistance and understand strategies for rational use of these drugs for treatment and prevention.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

The course is divided into two modules including parasitology and mycology.

The following topics are specifically developed in the parasitology module:
Part 1 general introduction: the general characteristics of parasites (definitions, classifications), vectors, their pathogenic powers, the fundamental bases of antiparasitic treatments and prophylaxis and the diagnosis of parasitic infections in the laboratory.
Part 2 special parasitology: This part of the course deals more specifically with the different pathologies associated with the main protozoa (digestive, urogenital, blood and tissue), helminths (nematodes, cestodes and trematodes) and arthropods responsible for infections in humans with their development cycle, their associated pathologies, their epidemiology and their diagnostic and therapeutic approach.
Part 3 antiparasitic agents: This last part briefly describes the main antiparasitic agents, their mechanisms of action.

The following topics are specifically developed in the mycology module:
Part 1: The general characteristics of fungi (definition, morphology, metabolism), the fundamental bases of antimycotic treatments and the diagnosis of infections in the mycology laboratory.
Part 2: The main fungal infections, including cutaneous mycoses (dermatophytes), opportunistic mycoses (aspergillosis, candidiasis, pneumocystis, etc.) and dimorphic mycoses (histoplasmosis, etc.) are described in detail with their clinical, epidemiological and therapeutic aspects.
Part 3 antimycotic agents: This last part briefly describes the main antifungal agents, their mechanisms of action. The course will be illustrated by clinical cases and videos.
