Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Mobilise a structured set of scientific knowledge and skills and specialised techniques in order to carry out missions of chemical engineering and materials science, using their expertise and adaptability.
    • Master and appropriately apply knowledge, models, methods and techniques specific to the field of chemistry and materials science.
  • Communicate and exchange information in a structured way - orally, graphically and in writing, in French and in one or more other languages - scientifically, culturally, technically and interpersonally, by adapting to the intended purpose and the relevant public.
    • Argue to and persuade customers, teachers and a board, both orally and in writing
    • Use and produce scientific and technical documents (reports, plans, specifications, etc.) adapted to the intended purpose and the relevant public.
  • Contribute by researching the innovative solution of a problem in engineering sciences.
    • Acquire and analyse data rigorously.

    • Master and appropriately apply knowledge, models, methods and techniques relating to physics, chemistry and mechanics of materials to the development, implementation, environmentally-friendly use of materials, and the behaviour of materials in a given context to a rational approach of material selection and innovation.
  • Plan, manage and lead projects in view of their objectives, resources and constraints, ensuring the quality of activities and deliverables.
    • Respect deadlines and timescales

Learning Outcomes of UE

Analyzing a physical metallurgy problem in all aspects
Proposing and using investigation methods
Understanding and interpretation of metallurgical phenomena applied to ferrous and nonferrous alloys, and of the influence on mechanical properties and on general corrosion resistance.
The aim is to teach the students the information necessary to understand metallography and physical metallurgy applied to metallic alloys (ferrous and non-ferrous alloys), in the fields of mechanical resistance, structural materials, and corrosion resistance.

UE Content: description and pedagogical relevance

Fe-C phase diagram; Application in case of the mechanical field: mechanical properties, steels: heat treatments, bulk heat treatments (in-depth study, isothermal and anisothermal decomposition, quenchability), superficial heat treatments, conventional unalloyed steels, high resistance steels; Structural materials: cast irons and special cast irons; Application in case of corrosion: stainless steels, refractory steels and alloys, aluminium, copper, zinc and titanium alloys.

Type(s) and mode(s) of Q1 UE assessment

  • Production (written work, report, essay, collection, product, etc.) - To be submitted in class
  • Oral examination - Face-to-face
  • Graded assignment(s) - Face-to-face
  • Practical exam - Face-to-face

Q1 UE Assessment Comments

I-META-003: Oral exam, 100% of the mark, max. duration 60 min (on the whole course). Students prepare their answers and expose them orally. The exam includes one general question on one chapter (synthesis and concision are required) and one secondary question on a precise matter, that will also be discussed orally.
I-META-004: Quoted exercices, 1/3 of mark, max. duration: 120 min. Quoted exercices on similar exercices than those realized during courses.
Practical work, 1/3 of the mark. The practical work reports are to be submitted at the start of the next session. The evaluation takes into account the work carried out during the laboratory sessions, the quality of the presentation of the reports, the thoroughness in the explanations provided, and the good mastery of the units and significant figures.
Practical test, 1/3 of the mark, max. duration: 120 min.  About 30 minutes of practical manipulation and the rest of the time in written interrogation for each student (students answer various questions on lab work).
I-META-005: Plants visits, 100 % of the mark. A report of astonishment is requested after each plant visit.

Method of calculating the overall mark for the Q1 UE assessment

I-META-003 :65%
I-META-004 :30%
I-META-005 :5%
