Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Acquire, understand and use knowledge in the fields of biology and other fields
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the general principles of life to understand questions and solve situations related to biology
    • Integrate knowledge from other fields of knowledge with biology (earth science, physics, chemistry, mathematics), in a critical way, to foster an interdisciplinary approach
  • Solve issues relevant to biology
    • Have developed practical skills in the various fields of biology through practical sessions in the laboratory and in the field, during which they have worked individually or in groups
    • Make accurate observations in the context of activities in the field and in the laboratory
    • Grasp and use the usual methods the conservation of live materials
    • Analyse and interpret, in an appropriate way, biological data collected in natura, through dissection or based on an experimental protocol in the laboratory
  • Apply a scientific approach and critical thinking
    • Understand and apply the basic principles of reasoning (obtaining data, analysis, synthesis, comparison, rule of three, syllogism, analogy, etc.)
    • Work with efficiency / accuracy / precision
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately in French and English
    • Communicate in French, orally and in writing, the results of experiments and observations by constructing and using graphs and tables
  • Develop autonomy, set training objectives and make choices to achieve them
    • Organise time and work, individually and in groups
    • Manage stress regardless of events (exams, presentations, etc.)

Learning Outcomes of UE

The zoology and ecology excursion takes place in Vidauban (center of the Var) and in the neighboring communes.
It makes it possible to make contact with the terrestrial ecology of a temperate continental region then with a submediterranean region. The diversity of biotopes encountered gives the opportunity to observe a large number of animal species impossible or very difficult to find in Belgium. It is an experiment in applied taxonomy and perception of the ecological structure of fauna and flora.
Observations must respect the requirements of scientific rigor. Circumstances must be established with precision and noted. Fieldwork should lead to the collection of study material (a plant collection and a zoological collection.)
The set of observations (collections and notes) must make a coherent whole and allow a real scientific evaluation.
Such an approach is commonly practiced during expeditions or explorations. Nowadays, this type of field work also forms the basis of impact studies, now generalized in Europe for any land-use planning operation.
In view of the difficulties linked to the health situation, additional details concerning the content of this course will be provided during the year. Moreover, if too many students register for this course, it will be necessary to reorganize it to adapt or organize an equivalent activity.
