Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes
Learning Outcomes of UE
have a wide view of the exploitation of mineral resources both by open cast and underground methods, and comparison with quarrying operations in Belgium;
practice another technical language, especially English;
acquire skills on security recommendations specific to the mining sector.
Content of UE
A trip of about 10 days is organized in a country where various mining methods can be encountered. During visits, different aspects of the exploitation of mineral resources are addressed: general geology, metallogeny, mining methods and development techniques (geometry of the methods), management of production and supply to processing plants, mineral processing, metallurgical extraction, security, environment, mining economy, etc.
Prior Experience
Geology; extraction of mineral resources; rock mechanics; design and construction of mining engineering structures; deep wells; reservoir engineering; mineral processing.
Type of Assessment for UE in Q2
Q2 UE Assessment Comments
The interrogation is organised as a quizz during the last day of the trip; its weight is 20% of the overall mark. A report in English is written by each student after the trip and is evaluated with an emphasis on personal observations. Bibliographic references are available in the Mining Department of the Faculty to help students in writing the report; students can also ask questions to people involved in teaching mining and related techniques. The report is weighted 100% of the total mark.
Type of Assessment for UE in Q3
Q3 UE Assessment Comments
If the report is of poor quality, it is asked the student to rewrite it without having to perform a new trip.
