Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in science and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
    • Identify, describe and explain basic scientific and mathematical principles
    • Identify, describe and explain the basic principles of engineering particularly in their specialising field
    • Understand laboratory techniques: testing, measuring, monitoring protocol, and security
    • Select and rigorously apply knowledge, tools and methods in sciences and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
  • Collaborate, work in a team
    • Interact effectively with other students to carry out collaborative projects.
  • Communicate in a structured way - both orally and in writing, in French and English - giving clear, accurate, reasoned information
    • Use several methods of written and graphic communication: text, tables, equations, sketches, maps, graphs, etc.
    • Present analysis or experiment results in laboratory reports

Learning Outcomes of UE

Understand the basic concepts of Thermodynamics; establish and apply the calculation methods allowing the determination of thermodynamic properties and their variations for simple thermodynamic transformations; establish the mathematical expressions of iso-property curves in thermodynamic diagrams; use thermodynamic diagrams; apply the first and second laws of Thermodynamics; understand and establish the energy principles of thermodynamic cycle machines; establish and use the fluid phase equilibria equations for pure compounds and mixtures; understand the working principles of thermodynamic machines (power engines, refrigeration machines, heat pumps), calculate their energy performances and understand the principles of improvement of their performances; analyse complex energy processes and calculate their performances.

Content of UE

Basic concepts; first and second laws of Thermodynamics; thermodynamic properties for pure compounds; thermodynamic diagrams; liquid-vapour equilibria for mixtures; cryoscopy; solubility; thermodynamic machines for energy conversion (principles), simple open systems (compressors, pumps, turbines, valves, tuyeres, heat exchangers, mixture chambers, phase separators); power Joule machines; power Hirn machines; power Rankine machines; Rankine machines for refrigeration applications and heat pumps; combustion engines.

Prior Experience

Algebra and Calculus basics.

Type of Assessment for UE in Q1

  • Written examination
  • Graded tests

Q1 UE Assessment Comments

Corresponds to the LA Fundamentals of Thermodynamics (written exam: 60% of the LA mark, quoted exercice: 40% of the LA mark).

Type of Assessment for UE in Q2

  • Presentation and/or works
  • Written examination
  • Graded tests

Q2 UE Assessment Comments

Corresponds to LA Engineering Thermodynamics (written exam: 37.5% of the LA mark, quoted exercice: 37.5% of the LA mark, labs: 25% of the LA mark).
Labs mark: labs reports (50%) and Answers to oral questions during labs (50%).

Type of Assessment for UE in Q3

  • Written examination

Q3 UE Assessment Comments

One single exam divided into parts related to the different LA's (except labs). Same weighing factors (theory-exercices) as for Terms 1 and 2 marks. Mark of labs is carried over.
