Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

- to reconstruct the historical stages of the appearance of International Organizations since the end of the First World War
- to reconstruct the operating methods of International, regional (with a focus on the European Union) and global (with a focus on the UN) organizations.
- to understand the functioning and the historical foundations of international law

Content of UE

Defined as the "law of international society", it depends on the composition of this society. The course therefore begins with a quick review of the notion of State whose elements and sovereignty are protected by international law. But there are other subjects of international law such as intergovernmental organizations, private persons (think of the protection of minorities) or NGOs.
First, I will come back to the origins of public international law (international law), insisting that initially it focused on relations between States, in particular on the regulation of international relations. Secondly, I will show that since 1945, it has also focused on the international organizations born out of the Second World War and the Cold War. I will insist on the birth of the European Union (ECSC, EEC, etc.) as well as that of the UN,
I will devote several lessons to international organizations, both global and regional. For the former, the United Nations, and its various agencies, such as the UNHCR and UNICEF for example, as well as organizations such as the ILO, the WTO, the WHO, etc. the origin as well as its evolutions attributions, with a particular focus on the maintenance of peace.
