Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Mobilise a structured set of scientific knowledge and skills and specialised techniques in order to carry out geology and mining engineering missions, using their expertise and adaptability.
    • Master and appropriately mobilise knowledge, models, methods and techniques relating to geology, applied mineralogy, applied petrography, hydrogeology and the study of flows underground, applied geophysics, geology with information technology, geostatistics, research and the evaluation of deposits of mineral and energy materials, rock mechanics and rock masses related to mining engineering, planning and exploitation of mineral and energy resources, development of minerals and waste, characterisation, management and treatment of polluted sites, natural hazards and environmental problems.
    • Identify and discuss possible applications of methods and new and emerging technologies in the fields of mining engineering and geology.

Learning Outcomes of UE

At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- present and explain the different types of mineral resources (metal ores, industrial minerals and fossil fuels)
- give the main characteristics of these resources (morphology, grade, reserves, co-products, etc.)
- compare and use space and geological time distribution of ore deposits as a prospection guide
- discuss prospection methods and environmental/availability concerns about natural resources (sustainable development).

Content of UE

- Introduction;
- Magmatic deposits (Cr, Ni/Cu, MGP, Ti/V, diamonds, REE-phosphates, IOCG, gems, Sn/W, Nb/Ta, Cu/Mo, U);
- Hydrothermal and volcanic deposits (Au/Ag/Cu/Hg, VMS and SMS);
- Vein deposits (Au/Sb, PbZnBaF, BiCoNiAgU);
- Dia- and epigenetic deposits (SSC, MVT, U);
- Superficial deposits (BIFs, Fe/Mn, Al, Ni, placers);
- Coal/oil/gas fields; alternative hydrocarbons; prospects for the future regarding energy supply and CO2 concerns.
