Programme component

Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Linguistic Skills - Apply linguistic knowledge to the practice of translation or interpretation.
    • Master the French language at level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
    • Master the foreign languages at level C2 in reading and listening, and level C1 in writing and speaking.
  • Thematic Competency - Develop and apply thematic knowledge related to domains in which translation is practised.
    • Undertake to acquire specialised terminology in the chosen foreign languages.
    • Identify what information and documentation is required.
    • Master the strategies, tools and techniques needed for carrying out documentary or terminological research.
  • Ethical and Professional Skills - Master the professional production of translations and manage interpersonal relations - Master the professional production of an interpretation.
    • Negotiate the conditions under which an interpretation job will be undertaken with the organiser of the event and ensure accepted quality norms are met.
    • Develop the ability to self-evaluate with a critical eye, in order to continually progress.
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills - Use and develop communication skills.
    • Exercise their abilities to communicate and comprehend effectively.
    • Capture the essence of a message in its original context and render it faithfully in another language.
    • Be willing and ready to adapt to new and varied communication situations and environments; be flexible.

Learning Outcomes of UE

Students will be able to: - memorize a speech on a subject of general or current interest while identifying and replicating its structure, using notes if required; - render the speech in correct and fluent French with no errors of meaning; - deliver the speech in a convincing fashion.

They will be able to: - prepare an interpretation session through documentary research and learning of the appropriate terminology; - correctly employ interpretation equipment and exercise appropriate behaviour in the interpreting booth; - access and exploit their linguistic skills and apply strategies to allow for the rapid transfer of ideas so as to interpret short speeches from the foreign language into French without meaning errors.

Students will be able to: - memorize a speech of a non- or averagely specialized nature while identifying and replicating its structure, using notes if required; - fully understand and memorize a more highly specialized speech through the preparation of documents and terminology; - render the speech in correct and fluent French with no errors of meaning and deliver the speech in a convincing fashion; - give a description and rationale for the strategies employed.

They will be able to: - interpret a speech in conditions approximating to professional reality; - without meaning errors; - in appropriate French, showing a mastery of registers and linguistic subtleties and respecting the requirements of rhetoric; - describe and justify strategies employed.
 

Content of UE

Consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of short and relatively non-specialized speeches. Memorization, note-taking and rendering in French.   Exercises based on non-prepared speeches, freely-rendered written texts or recordings of original speeches.  Introduction to interpretation theory, conference terminology and specificities of Belgian and international institutions.

Consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of speeches of various length and complexity. Topics deriving from major international meetings.

Exercises based on non-prepared speeches, freely-rendered written texts or recordings of original speeches. Memorization, note-taking and rendering in French.   Theoretical and practical work experience (visits, "dummy booths") within Parliamentary institutions and international organizations. Consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of short and relatively non-specialized speeches.
