Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Understand language of instruction and foreign languages (language skills)
    • Communicate easily and adequately, in both selected foreign languages, at a minimum level of B2 in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
  • Understand and integrate cultural similarities and differences (cultural and intercultural skills)
    • Demonstrate real knowledge of the cultures of the studied languages
  • Use lexicographical resources and reference materials to lead linguistic mediation activities individually or as part of a team (professional skills)
    • Carry out, alone or in groups, activities or projects involving critical analysis
    • Communicate results or conclusions of these activities or projects in an appropriate manner

Learning Outcomes of UE

Upon completion of the language courses of the second block, students will have a good command of the foreign language at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

They will be able to:
- understand articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular stances or viewpoints;
- understand contemporary prose;
- write clear, detailed texts on a variety of subjects related to their fields of interest, which give information or give reasons in support of or against a particular point of view;
- follow extended speech and complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar; understand most TV news and current affairs programmes in standard dialect;
- interact with native speakers to take part in a conversation, to express and back an opinion;
- give clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to their fields of interest; develop a clear point of view on a topical issue.    

Students will also be able to:
- identify, put into perspective and describe important events considered to be part of the general (i.e. historical, geographical or socioeconomic) culture of a native speaker;
- do relevant research on these topics;
- give a comprehensive and coherent account of the way they tackled the problems encountered in their research.

Content of UE

Commented reading of factual and literary texts. Commented listening of audio(-visual) recordings. Analysis and commented reading of varied texts (content, style, length, function). Analysis and commented listening of genuine audio(-visual) documents in standard dialect, involving native speakers, on familiar or topical issues. Writing exercises.

Production of texts with implementation of compensation, control and correction strategies:
- summarizing of information and arguments coming from various sources;
- development of personal arguments. Speaking exercises:
- detailed description and presentation of general topics;
- personal argumentation;
- interactions.

Students will become acquainted with the geographical, historical and socioeconomic context of the language they are studying. They will have to do research and hand in personal assignments on questions related to these topics.
