Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Master expertise.
    • Have acquired knowledge and a thorough understanding of specialist areas of physics in connection with mathematics and/or advanced laboratory practices required for these sectors.
  • Provide clear and accurate information.
    • Share their knowledge and findings clearly and back them up rationally to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Collaborate and work in a team.
    • Have developed practical skills in physics through practical sessions in the laboratory and sessions during which they have worked individually and in groups.

Learning Outcomes of UE

- Learn basics on physical processes accompanying the interaction of ionizing particles-radiations  with matter
- Description of  the detection principles of ionizing radiations
- Study of the ageing and radiation effects on materials
- Introduction to radio-protection (biological effects of the ionizing radiations)

Content of UE

Course
- Introduction : nuclear physics, units, dosimetry, ...
- Sources of ionizing radiations
- Interaction of heavy charged particles, electrons(positrons), photons and neutrons with matter
- Radiation Detection :  identification, measurement of ionization, detectors, monitors
- Ageing and radiation effects
- Introduction to radioprotection

Labs
- electron interaction with  matter : absoprtion and backscattering  (using a Geiger counter)
- gamma rays interacation with matter : absorption in different materials (using a scintillation counter spectrometer)
- X-rays or low energy gamma-rays spectrometry detection using a CZT detector
- operation of alpha, beta, gamma and neutron monitors
- cosmic ray detection
- study of different materials irradiated with slow neutrons
- recap on nuclear physics, dosimetry and ionizing radiation detection
