Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • In the field of biological sciences and particularly in the field of the biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, possess highly specialised and integrated knowledge and a wide range of skills adding to those covered in the Bachelor's programme in biological sciences.
  • Conduct extensive research and development projects related to biological sciences, in biochemistry and in molecular and cell biology.
    • Apply, mobilise, articulate and promote the knowledge and skills acquired in order to help lead and complete a project.
    • Contributing to a project by mastering its complexity and taking into account the objectives, allocated resources and constraints that characterise it.
    • Show initiative and be able to work independently and in teams.
  • Manage and lead research, development and innovation projects.
    • Understand unprecedented problems in biological sciences, and more specifically in biochemistry and molecular and cell biology and its applications.
    • Organise and lead a research, development or innovation project to completion.
    • Methodically research valid scientific information, critically analyse, propose and argue potentially innovative solutions to targeted problems.
  • Master communication techniques.
    • Communicate, both orally and in writing, their findings, original proposals, knowledge and underlying principles, in a clear, structured and justified manner.
    • Adapt their communication to a variety of audiences.
  • Develop and integrate a high degree of autonomy.
    • Aquire new knowledge independently.
    • Develop and integrate a high degree of autonomy to evolve in new contexts.
  • Apply scientific methodology.
    • Critically reflect on the impact of their discipline in general, and on the contribution to projects.
    • Demonstrate thoroughness, independence, creativity, intellectual honesty, and ethical values.

Learning Outcomes of UE

The control of gene expression is an important mechanism of molecular biology, allowing to understand how an organism can control the amount of protein needed for its optimal functioning. At the end of the course, the students are able to describe the mechanisms allowing a cell to adapt the mechanisms of gene transcription and mRNA translation according to its needs and environmental factors as well as to describe the basic techniques that allow to highlight of DNA/protein and protein/protein interactions. At the end of this course the students will have acquired a reading key to follow the domain of transcription regulation. They will be able to understand high level articles published in international scientific journals.

Content of UE

The induction and repression systems as key elements in the control ofgene expression are taught from the simplest organism (lactose operon) to more complex systems such as mammals (regulation hormonal).

Prior Experience

Molecular Biology course of 2nd Bachelier

Type of Assessment for UE in Q2

  • Presentation and/or works

Q2 UE Assessment Comments

The evaluation will be based on the lecture = MCQ, and/or ture or false, and/or open-ended questions. A presentation about a recent scientific article in the field will be also evaluated.

Type of Assessment for UE in Q3

  • Presentation and/or works

Q3 UE Assessment Comments

The evaluation will be based on the lecture = MCQ, and/or ture or false, and/or open-ended questions. The presentation about a recent scientific article in the field will still be required except if validated in Q2.
