Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • In the field of chemistry, possess highly specialised and integrated knowledge and a wide range of skills adding to those covered in the Bachelor's programme in chemistry.
  • Help lead and complete a major development project, individually or in teams, related to chemistry.
    • Mobilise, articulate and promote the knowledge and skills acquired.
    • Assess the degree of complexity of the project and take into account the objectives, allocated resources and constraints that characterise it.
    • Demonstrate independence and their ability to work alone or in teams.
  • Communicate clearly in the scientific domain.
    • Communicate, both orally and in writing, their findings, original proposals, knowledge and underlying principles, in a clear, structured and justified manner.
    • Where possible, communicate in English.
  • Develop and integrate a high degree of autonomy.
    • Pursue their education and gain additional knowledge and new skills.
    • Adapt and evolve in a new context.
  • Apply high quality scientific methodology.
    • Critically reflect on the impact of chemistry in general and projects to which they particularly contribute.
    • Demonstrate thoroughness, independence, creativity, intellectual honesty, and ethical values.

Learning Outcomes of UE

The objective of this course is to initiate the students to the emerging field of Bioinspired Chemistry. We will explore and be inspired from natural structures and assemblies, in order to design new approaches of chemistry to be applied to the domains nanosciences,  energy, health, and catalysis.

Content of UE

AA1: Bioinspired Self-Assembly (10h) I. Concepts     - Biomimicry, Bioinspiration     - Examples of bioinspired structures/materials     - Principles of recognition, self-assembly, self-organisation, cooperativity II. Self-assembled bioinspired structures       -  DNA-based structures           -  Peptide-based structures          -  Molecular cages and receptors        -  Molecular machines  III. Biomineralization AA2: Analytical methods for biomolecular systems (10h + 10h practical works) Optical spectroscopy and microscopy for bioinspired systems (M. Surin) Mass spectrometry for biomolecules (J. De Winter et P. Gerbaux) AA3: Applications des systèmes bio-inspirés (10h + 10h exercises) Bio-inspired surfaces Biomineralization Artificial photosynthesis  Bioinpired catalysis
