Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Mobilise a structured set of scientific knowledge and skills and specialised techniques in order to carry out geology and mining engineering missions, using their expertise and adaptability.
    • Assess the validity of models and results in view of the state of science and characteristics of the problem.
  • Contribute by researching the innovative solution of a problem in engineering sciences.
    • Design and implement technical analysis, experimental studies and numerical modelling.
    • Adequately interpret results taking into account the reference framework within which the research was developed.

Learning Outcomes of UE

Get acquainted with the fundamentals of Acoustics. To understand the phenomena related to generation, propagation and perception of noise. To address and solve acoustic problems likely to appear in industry with a particular concern on a rigorous analysis and a rigorous application of the theory. Sound measurement devices. At the end of the instruction, the students will be able to understand the exploitation of experimental vibrations (signals measurement, data-acquisition, industrial hardware and software, signal processing) in frequency and time domains; to get a basic knowledge of experimental vibration and shock analysis: practice, multi-channel survey, principle of some typical methods, limitations, validation; to propose efficient solutions in order to limit the structural vibrations; to reflect critically on the practice of problems and solutions in vibration field.

Content of UE

The learning outcomes I-MRDV-007 is based on two parts. The first part is dedicated to a lecture course with specific theoretical issues (Dynamic signals and systems; Vibration signal analysis; Shock data analysis; Vibration testing; Human vibration; Vibration on buildings). The second part is based on a personal work using the outcomes. The learning outcomes I-MRDV-008 focuses Fundamentals of Acoustics: wave equation, pressure, particle velocity, sound celerity, acoustic impedance, acoustic intensity and power. Human perception of sound. Propagation of sound. Measurement. Experimental Acoustics. Principal laws and standards in Europe, Belgium and Walloon Region. Iso Standards. Audition loss of company workers. Noise of machines: "emitter-propagation-receptor" model.

Type of Assessment for UE in Q2

  • Oral Examination
  • Practical test

Q2 UE Assessment Comments

For the learning outcomes I-MRDV-007, the main assessment is based on the a personal work using the outcomes (50% of the mark) and an oral examination (50% of the mark). During the oral examination (maximal duration: 4 hours), the students are allowed to consult (without writing) their notes during 10 minutes after having received the question. They then answer in a synthetic way on a sheet of paper from which they orally expose their answer. The secondary assessment is based on a presentation of the personnal work. For the learning outcomes I-MRDV-008, the oral exam consists of applications. The students may read their course notes.
