Objectives of Programme's Learning Outcomes

  • Implement an engineering approach dealing with a set problem taking into account technical, economic and environmental constraints
    • Identify and describe the problem to be solved and the functional need (of prospective clients) to be met considering the state of technology
    • Design, evaluate and optimise solutions addressing the problem
    • Implement a chosen solution in the form of a drawing, a schema, a plan, a model, a prototype, software and/or digital model
    • Identify and acquire the information and skills needed to solve the problem
  • Understand the theoretical and methodological fundamentals in science and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
    • Identify, describe and explain basic scientific and mathematical principles
    • Identify, describe and explain the basic principles of engineering particularly in their specialising field
    • Select and rigorously apply knowledge, tools and methods in sciences and engineering to solve problems involving these disciplines
  • Demonstrate thoroughness and independence throughout their studies
    • Demonstrate self-awareness, asses themself, and develop appropriate learning strategies.
    • Learn to use various resources made available to inform and train independently

Learning Outcomes of UE

Master and explain the fundamental notions needed to use databases and geographic information systems; implement these notions in the software used in the course; acquire a self-learning attitude to solve problems using deductive reasoning and basic knowledge.

Content of UE

lectures : - introduction to relational databases; - introduction to Geographical Information Systems; - introduction to geoprocessing using Python. exercises : - hands-on introduction to RDBMS : introduction to relational database design and SQL request writing; - hands-on introduction to Geographical Information Systems and geoprocessing using Python: spatial reference systems : definition, transforms, on the fly reprojection; data sources : common formats, geodata servers; raster datasets : data coding, representation, georeferencing, use Digital Elevation Models; vector datasets : link to data source (databases), data coding, symbology, selection operations, basic geoprocessing operations, topologic and non-topologic editing; Input of field data;

Type of Assessment for UE in Q1

  • Oral examination
  • eTest

Q1 UE Assessment Comments

Oral examination during the regular examination period without class notes or laboratory notes. Evaluation on all of the material. Each student draws a card with two questions. The first question deals with knowledge and understanding of notions explained during the lectures and exercises. Each student gives a presentation on his answer (prior written preparation of maximum 30 minutes) and replies to oral questions on this presentation. The second question is a "hands-on" exercise. The student has to solve the problem with the softwares used during the exercises. Evaluation : exercises tests, 20% of the mark; exam 1st question, 50% of the mark; exam 2nd question, 30% of the mark.

Type of Assessment for UE in Q2

  • Oral Examination

Q2 UE Assessment Comments

Oral examination during the regular examination period without class notes or laboratory notes. Evaluation on all of the material. Each student draws a card with two questions. The first question deals with knowledge and understanding of notions explained during the lectures and exercises. Each student gives a presentation on his answer (prior written preparation of maximum 30 minutes) and replies to oral questions on this presentation. The second question is a "hands-on" exercise. The student has to solve the problem with the softwares used during the exercises. Evaluation : exam 1st question, 50% of the mark; exam 2nd question, 50% of the mark.
